Starlington is a character in The Chronicles of Candle Cove. He is the navigator of the Jolly Hounds, and formerly an officer of the Naval Pirate Hunting Corps. He is an aspiring astronomer and is easily recognizable by his star motif.

Appearance

Physical traits

Starlington is fairly short and slim, with fair skin and ice blue eyes. He has prominent cheekbones, a pointy chin, and a fairly large forehead. His eyes are half-lidded and his mouth is naturally pouty, giving him a perpetual bored expression. His eyebrows are very sparse (possibly shaven off), and his teeth are noticeably yellow. His natural hair is dirty blond and close-cropped, although he normally wears a wig to cover it.

Speech

Starlington has posh received pronunciation British accent, making him sound posh. He speaks in a flowery and somewhat theatrical way, often throwing in big words he doesn't actually know the meaning of.

Dress style

Starlington is most often seen wearing a platinum blond powdered wig that is made up of 5 large pointed waves sticking out from it—one at the top, two at the temples, and two behind his ears—which give his head the silhouette of a five-pointed star.

Likewise, he is most often seen wearing makeup typical of a nobleman. His face is covered in white powder, and he also wears pink blush, blue eyeshadow, black eyeliner, and red lip tint. He also draws on thin black penciled eyebrows and a beauty mark above his lip.

In his standard outfit, he wears a dark blue jacket with matching breeches, white stockings, black shoes with gold buckles, white gloves, a white jabot, and gold epaulletes. He also wears a lot of gold jewelry. He carries a rapier attached to his left hip.

For nightwear, he wears an off-white nightshirt.

Personality

Starlington immediately comes across as self-important and difficult to please, owing to his upper-class background. He often turns up his nose at things he considers to be unsophisticated, especially elements of pirate life that the rest of his crew takes part in.

He is also sharply opinionated and shows no fear expressing his views, even if it risks angering others. Because of his pride, he tends to be stubborn and have trouble listening to authority, which led him to be discharged from the Navy, and causes him to always be in hot water with Milo.

Despite his boldness, he's sensitive and is easily overwhelemed and upset when dealing with everything from duels, conflicts with his crewmates, and minor inconveniences (see his page quote).

He's very sociable and enjoys attending parties, although he finds socializing itself to be exhausting and boring, suggesting that he is more of an introvert.

Even as a pirate, he is very concerned with his status and reputation.

He is extremely driven when it comes to accomplishing his goals.

He can be cunning and deceptive at times, once secretly dating (and later getting engaged to) multiple women at a time in an attempt to get married quickly.

History

Before the series

Starlington was born into an upper-class family and developed a love for astronomy in grammar school.

At some point, he dated and got engaged to several woman at one time (without their knowledge) before this plan ended in disaster.

At another point, he joined the Corps, but was a stubborn and unruly member. Once, during a skirmish with the Jolly Hounds, he ended up lost and stuck on their ship, leading him to defect from the Corps and join them instead.

Trivia

• His outfit similar to that of the titular character from The Little Prince.
• His makeup is inspired by '80s new wave musicians such as Robert Smith, The Human League, and Taco.
• He is seemingly unrecognizeable without his wig and makeup. Multiple times, the crew stumbled into him au natural and assumed he was an intruder.
• When asked in an interview, a crew member said that Starlington's favorite bands would be Pet Shop Boys, ABC, and Orchestral Manoevers in the Dark.
• According to the series bible, Starlington came into possession of his wig by stealing it from a navyman.
• His teeth are yellow because he drinks a lot of tea and wine.
• This suggests that the legal drinking age in Candle Cove (or at least Waxony) is 19 or younger.
